The "Alaskan Sampler" is a wonderful mixture of life in Alaska. The individual designs can be used to make many other smaller projects. A letter explaining the picture & border words is included & reads: Dear Friend, I have created the "Alaskan Sampler" for you and to recognize and share the "Great Land" and some of its memories. Each portion of the design relates to Alaskan life both past and present. To enjoy your sampler and share it with others I thought it would be an added feature to explain the items within the pattern. In the central portion, the theme of Alaska, the "Last Frontier," appears for it truly is the last frontier left in the United States. Please also note individual designs of the whale, polar bear, eagle, and puffin...all creatures indigenous to Alaska. In addition, I have incorporated the Alaska State Flag; the big dipper pointing to the North Star, the State flower; the Forget-me-not and fireweed which dots the land from spring to fall. Around the border, alphabetically, are other Alaskan notations which further represent the story of the people and the land. Alyeska, the old name for Alaska, is derived from Native origins. The Bear, Caribou, Eagles, and Foxes roam throughout the State. Denali, "the great one," is the Native American name for Mount McKinley. Of course, Glaciers are plentiful and number in the thousands. Halibut, a bottom fish, and staple for both residents as well as sport fisherman, remains plentiful. The Iditarod, the "last great race" on earth, still runs and is an event that is anticipated each winter. Now we come to Juneau the State Capital and the great Kenai peninsula incorporating many of the Lakes of Alaska. Within this region Moose, Otter, Puffin, Reindeer, and Salmon continue to establish and maintain their existence. Throughout Alaska, the Natives add their rich tradition of Totems, Qiviut weaving from musk ox, and the
